The book at the gate, replaced
Most centres keep a signing in and out book at the gate or the security hut. It works until somebody needs an answer from it: who is out right now, who was out last night, when a resident actually left. CheckSteady keeps the same record on a phone or tablet at the gate, and answers those questions in one look.
Tiles at the top count who is on site, who is off site, and who has moved today, and each one is a filter. Each card carries the movement it expects next: Sign in for somebody off site, Sign out for somebody on it, one tap either way. On a tablet a swipe does the same — right to sign in, left to sign out — without looking away. Residents on an authorised absence show as away with their return date, and every movement carries the staff member who recorded it.

What can the gate log answer?
Supervisors and managers have the reports a paper book cannot give:
Absent now
Everyone off site at this moment, with when they left, who signed them out, and whether the absence is authorised.
Absent overnight
Who was off site at midnight on each night in a range. The app takes that snapshot itself just after midnight and keeps it as long as the register.
Out and back
One row per absence: room, date and time out, date and time back, hours away, and who signed each.
The movement log
Every movement for a day or a range, newest first, with the time and the staff member. Quick ranges for today, this week and last month, and a spreadsheet export.
All of them mark under-18s, so a child's overnight absence stands out. Where a centre turns it on, the nightly email to the staff it chooses also names any household with children on site and no guardian signed in, and any check-in recorded while the person was signed out at the gate.
One tap, two records, if you want it
The gate register and the daily register are separate records, because being on site and having been seen today are different questions. A centre that works its gate can let a sign-in there also count as the day's check-in, so residents present once. A sign-out never counts.
Common questions
Can it replace the paper signing in and out book at the gate?
Yes. Each resident is signed in or out with one tap or one swipe, and every movement is recorded with the time, the direction and the name of the staff member who recorded it. Unlike a book, it cannot be torn out, written over or left illegible, and the whole log for any day or range is searchable and exports as a spreadsheet.
How is this different from the daily register?
They answer different questions and are kept as separate records. The gate register says where somebody is right now — the fire-drill question. The daily register says whether somebody has been seen today at all, which is the welfare and compliance question. A resident can be off site and still have checked in.
Can a sign-in at the gate count as the day's check-in?
Yes, if the centre turns that on. A sign-in at the gate — never a sign-out — is then also recorded as that resident's daily check-in, marked as made at the gate, so a centre that works the gate does not ask residents to present twice.
Can we see who was out overnight?
Yes. Just after midnight the app records who was off site, and keeps that snapshot for as long as the register, so a night months ago can still be answered after the movement log itself has been cleared. The Absent overnight report lists each night in a range, with under-18s marked.
Can staff sign several people in at once?
Yes. Select several lets you tick people and sign them in or out together — a minibus returning, a family arriving. Each person still gets their own movement, with their own time and the staff member's name; the shortcut is on the screen, not in the record.
Can security staff use it without seeing residents' personal details?
Yes. Guards get their own accounts with the security role: they can search residents, sign them in and out and record check-ins, but never see a date of birth — only whether someone is an adult — and identity numbers never appear in a list.
Does it work if the connection drops at the gate?
Yes. Movements queue on the device, the card says Queued, and everything sends when the connection returns. Nothing is lost and nothing needs remembering.
Does it cover staff, visitors and contractors?
Yes, where the visitors feature is on. Staff, visitors, contractors and suppliers are signed in on arrival and out when they leave, and anyone still on site appears on the roll call.
